Gunner Henry Kirkby was born around 1880, his parents Joe and Ada Kirby running the Station pub at Kiveton Park Station.  He enlisted on 15th December 1915 at Worksop and served with the Royal Garrison Artillery (80728; 80844).  Henry got into trouble at one point as his record suggests that he was charged with being “drunk on sentry, being improperly dressed and absent from post”.

Sapper George Knapton served with the Royal Engineers (2960).  He had married Lavinia Ann Holmes of Wales Bar and they were living at 36 Compton Street, Walkley.  He was killed on 21st July 1916 and was buried at Hamel Military Cemetary, Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, Plot I B25, and is commemorated on St John’s Church plaque.  We believe that this is the same person as the H Knapton on the Wales memorial as we have been unable to trace an H Knapton who served in the Royal Engineers.  If you are able to provide further clarification, please let us know.
