Brian Cheesman - Evacuee

: I was an evacuee to Kiveton from Moulsecoomb Junior School in Brighton during WW2, staying latterly with Mrs Holden at 20 Railway Terrace.  My sister Anne was also in the village.

My memories are happy, partly because, unlike in the council estate we were from, I was allowed to join a boys' gang and took part in a 'raid' on Wales armed with a gas mantle. During my stay Sheffield was blitzed and buses came by minus their windows.  I recollect a deep community spirit, crowds gathering at a mine entrance when news of an underground accident broke.  I believe we stayed less than a year, but I retained a strong attachment to the North and mining folk in particular, finishing up as a librarian here in Durham from 1967 onwards.  I re-met Mrs Holden in the 1970s but on a more recent visit could not locate Railway Terrace.
