This section of the site is devoted to the histories of Kiveton Park Colliery and Waleswood Colliery. It explores what it meant to work and live in and around them. All the content here has been provided by local historians working with the memories and support of the men and women whose lives were shaped by the coal industry in our area. Other parts of this site, such as the Photographic Archive, also have extensive material relating to our mining heritage.
- The History of the Pits
The first part of this section explores their history, offering a brief chronological account of key stages in their development, from sinking in the nineteenth century to closure in the twentieth.
- Lives at the Pit
This is history from the perspectives of the men who worked at the pits, about their own experiences. Most of this section is based on oral history interviews carried out by local historians. We've been told interesting and in some cases very surprising things.
- Question and Answers
The last part of this section is a bit different! It's a series of questions and answers, inspired by the inquisitive pupils of Kiveton Park Meadows, Kiveton Infants and Wales Junior and Infants. For several weeks in June 2007 they interrogated former miners about their times in the pit: here are some of the popular questions we had to face!
